A brief description of how the institution ensures that its lowest-paid workers (including contractors, if applicable) receive sustainable compensation:
Through both formal salary surveys and spot checks on individual job types, we ensure that the salaries that we pay to the lowest paid workers are competitive within the marketplace. These consistently show that the institutional compensation practices are approximately 13.4 per cent ahead of the Alberta market. Contractors that do not work directly for the university, would be paid in accordance with Alberta's regulations for minimum wage. For details visit: http://employment.alberta.ca/SFW/998.html

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Our report does not fully reflect contractors as there is no central way to track those numbers on our campus. All support staff positions of greater than 12 months are evaluated by Compensation and Job Design in Central Human Resources. This is to ensure internal equity and also to ensure UAlberta salaries are competitive in the market. UAlberta conducts an external market survey approximately every three years to ensure salaries are competitive with the market. The most recent survey conducted was in 2009 and results indicated that UAlberta support staff salaries are approximately 13.4 per cent ahead of the Alberta market.
