GLOBAL EDUCATION PROGRAM:

University students have a desire to engage with global issues throughout the year and to meet this need, the Global Education Program provides programming year round to educate students on international issues. The Global Education Program works collaboratively with professors and units on campus as well as community organizations to provide additional programming such as lectures, conferences, book launches, exhibitions and intercultural training. This program offers learning and development (training) opportunities targeted for students.

THE GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

The Global Citizenship Curriculum Development Project (GCCD) is a cooperative venture of the Faculty of Education, and University of Alberta International with the focus on educating students to become responsible citizens, engaged in the democratic process and become aware of their capacity to effect change in their communities, society and the world. As part of this program, GCCD is currently developing a Global Citizenship Certificate program. GCCD also offers global education-specific courses, including Int D 404: Global Citizenship: Contemporary Issues and Perspectives. The GCCD also offers conferences, most recently a Global Citizenship Symposium.

INTERNATIONAL WEEK

International Week (I-Week), the largest annual education extracurricular event on campus, fosters global citizenship through engagement with today’s most pressing issues. The week features many varied events with faculty, students, community members, and government representatives to spark thought and stir discussion on current global issues.

Another initiative of UAlberta's Global Education is the Welcome to the Reel World film series. Over the course of the year, films are presented followed by a discussion with faculty and guests. The series raises awareness about global issues throughout campus and the Edmonton community. Pairing award-winning documentaries with academics, experienced NGO partners, and remarkable individuals with first-hand international experience, the film series is a chance to participate in open dialogue on the most pressing issues confronting the world today.

The Faculty of Education is home to the Centre for Global Citizenship Education and Research (CGCER), whose aim is to develop global citizens who have a set of knowledges, skills and attitudes that make it possible for them to be actively involved in local, national and global institutions and systems that directly or indirectly affect their lives. Through research, education and action, the CGCER heightens consciousness and understanding of issues of global citizenship education in order to contribute to the collective development of societies that provide basic social justice and human rights.
