A brief description of the program:
There are several initiatives that take place during move-in at the University of Alberta’s different residences.
In 2011, a program began that educates about and promotes the proper use of the University of Alberta’s waste management system at the East Campus Village (ECV) Graduate Residence on North Campus. Staff and volunteers from the Office of Sustainability were present during move-in weekend to explain the recycling and composting options available, to monitor contamination of waste, recycling and organics bins, and to distribute handbills with information and instructions for use of the UAlberta recycling and composting system at ECV. 2011 also coincided with the initial pilot of new waste bin signage, so the opportunity for feedback (whiteboard and markers) was given to residents as they moved in. Goodwill Industries of Alberta donation bins were present to collect reusable clothing and furniture.
Additionally, Residence Services at Résidence Saint-Jean puts together “Welcome Packages” for international students with a “kitchen starter kit” mainly composed of kitchenware left from the previous year’s move-out.
