A brief description of the program:
Both Augustana Campus Students’ Association and Students’ Union on North Campus have bicycle sharing programs. SUSTAIN SU BIKE LIBRARY http://www.su.ualberta.ca/services/sustainsu/bikelibrary/ The Sustain SU Bike Library is a service of the Students' Union, supported by the institution. The Bike Library has an inventory of approximately 35 bicycles, which are rented out from April to October, to all members of the campus community, including students, staff and faculty. Bicycles are rented by the month, and for a $40 deposit renters get a bike, u-lock, a bell and two lights. A deduction from the $40 deposit may occur if damage is noted or if any of the accompanying accessories are not returned. The Bike Library does not provide helmets, although their use is strongly encouraged. In addition, the Bike Library offers bicycle repair services, provided by their Bike Library mechanic, who holds a paid position of 10 hours a week. This position has been supported by the University of Alberta since 2009. In addition, volunteer bicycle mechanics are trained by the Bike Library mechanic to perform inspections and repairs. This service allows campus community members to have their bicycles repaired, free of charge. The Sustain SU Bike Library also periodically hosts bike checks during the school year, whereby anyone on campus can bring their bicycle and receive a free inspection and tune-up. AUGUSTANA BIKE SHARE PROGRAM http://www.augustana.ualberta.ca/sustainability/programs The idea for the Bike Share program was developed through a student Community Service Learning program on campus and supported through the Students’ Association (SA). The primary goal is to encourage students, staff and faculty to use pedal power instead of vehicles, and to provide a source of transportation for errands, etc. for those students living on campus. The program also creates some student employment opportunities on campus, as the SA hires a Bike Share coordinator and a bike mechanic. Students and staff can check out or rent a bike for $20 per semester, with a damage deposit of $20 per year.
