Has the institution installed vending machine motion sensors for at least one vending machine?:
Yes

A brief description of the technology used:

MOTION SENSORS
We have eight snack machines on campus operated by Edmonton Coin Vending that have motion detection technology; three are located in Edmonton Clinic Health Academy, three are in the Go Centre, and both the Education building and the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences have one machine each.

Currently the lights stay on for one hour after usage but can be adjusted.

OTHER ENERGY SAVING INITIATIVES
In addition to the motion sensors on the Edmonton Coin Vending machines, all new snack machines are equipped with LED lighting, reducing energy use.

We also have an energy saving initiative with Coca-Cola, which includes 80 machines that turn their lights off between 10:00pm and 6:00am, and an EMS-55 energy management system. EMS-55 is a “smart” temperature control unit for cold drink equipment; it can increase energy efficiency by up to 35 per cent by developing a user profile for each piece of equipment that regulates how often the cooling compressor needs to operate to ensure cold drinks are dispensed.
