Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
A very successful Energy Management Program has been in place at the University of Alberta since the mid-1970s. The university’s program resulted in an annual cost avoidance of $15,114,030 in 2009/2010. The program has resulted in accumulated cost avoidance in excess of $258,000,000 and cumulative carbon dioxide emissions reduction in excess of 2,300,000 tonnes achieved since its inception in 1975/1976. Also since 1975/76, utility consumption per square meter for electricity, steam, and water has decreased 24 per cent, 46 per cent, and 70 per cent, respectively. The university is currently in the final year of its seven-year, $25-million Energy Management Program, and the $35-million, seven-year Next Generation Energy Management program will continue to make significant energy reductions at the University of Alberta. Note: The performance year reported is the 2009/2010 fiscal year and the values encompass the energy used for heating, steam, and chilled water.
