Campus Saint-Jean, a faculty of the University of Alberta, is a French-speaking campus located in Edmonton. More than 700 students study full time at this campus in a variety of programs, and many more students take courses there. From 2008 to 2010, the entirety of the Dean of Campus Saint-Jean air travel was offset though purchasing equivalent carbon offsets through “Offsetters.” In 2009, the program was expanded to cover the air travel of the recruitment staff, a team that travels frequently to reach French-speaking communities that are often remote.

This program is currently on hold because the Campus Saint-Jean Sustainability Committee is re-evaluating their offsetting practices in an effort to expand it further and eventually become a carbon-neutral campus. They hope to find a better way to reduce their carbon footprint with flights as well as supporting local initiatives that serve similar purposes.
