A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
INSTITUTIONAL CONSTRUCTION Minimum LEED® Silver Standard or equivalent is required for all new buildings and major renovations that receive substantial provincial government funding, starting in 2008. The Green Globes rating system and guidelines are also used on other projects to rate and guide sustainable designs. Although not all projects at the university will be formally certified, all projects should endeavour to incorporate sustainable principles and measures as identified by the LEED® and/or Green Globes Rating Systems. One building has received LEED® Gold certification, and five others are currently pursuing LEED® Silver. Two buildings are registered for Green Globes certification and are expected to receive at least a three out of five rating upon their completion. FACILITIES AND OPERATIONS The offices of Planning and Project Delivery and Operations and Maintenance within Facilities and Operations are primarily responsible for ensuring compliance with the university’s Design Guidelines and Green Building and Operating Practices and Guidelines. These offices guide and inform the process and associated engineering consultants and contractors, through schematic design, design development, contract document preparation, tender, construction, inspections, start-up, and commissioning to ensure that the intent of the guidelines and green building principles and measures are met. The Facilities and Operations Sustainability Committee exists to provide another point of collaboration among the diverse staff and management responsible for Planning and Project Delivery, Utilities, Operations and Maintenance, Buildings and Grounds Services, Ancillary Services, and our satellite campuses, and to advance sustainability in university design and construction. More details about Design and Construction Guidelines are available on the University of Alberta Facilities and Operations website: http://www.facilities.ualberta.ca/FO_Forms/Contractors_ConstructionV3.aspx
