A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with sustainable building operation and maintenance guidelines and policies:

The OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE (OM) and UTILITIES units within Facilities and Operations (FO) are primarily
responsible for ensuring compliance with the University’s Building Operations and Maintenance Practices and
Guidelines. These units guide and inform a team of engineers, technologists, project managers, estimators,
operators, and trades people to act as stewards of operational sustainability at the University of Alberta.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS SERVICES http://www.facilities.ualberta.ca/en/Operations_Maintenance_FO/BGS.aspx Buildings and Grounds Services (BGS) within OM is further organized into four distinct areas, each with a
Facilities Services Manager that supervises their area and provides coordination between BGS and other campus
service providers.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS http://www.facilities.ualberta.ca/en/Operations_Maintenance_FO/EMSO.aspx Energy Management and Sustainable Operations (EMSO) works to minimize the University of Alberta’s impact
on the environment by leading the Energy Management Program and acting as a central collaborator with the
other units within FO to advance sustainability in Operations.

FACILITIES AND OPERATIONS SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE
The Facilities and Operations Sustainability Committee exists to provide another point of collaboration among
the diverse staff and management responsible for Planning and Project Delivery, Utilities, Operations and Maintenance, Buildings and Grounds Services, Ancillary Services, and our satellite campuses, and to advance sustainability in university operations.
