Does the institution have sustainability-themed housing (residential floor or hall, or theme house) where residents learn about sustainability together and to which residents must apply?:
Yes
None
A brief description of the themed housing:
The University of Alberta Eco House is a retrofitted home located in the East Campus Village residence with a number of green building features, including the use of recycled building materials, an earth tubes heating system, solar water heating, and low-flush and low-flow water fixtures. The residents of Eco House also maintain an organic vegetable garden and native plant landscaping.
The three residents of Eco House are selected based on an application process and engage in sustainable lifestyle choices, such as composting and recycling. Although not required, many of the residents choose to provide informal education programming around the house (i.e. tours) as a means of building awareness of their home and its sustainability features. Students are selected based on a demonstrated interest in continually learning about issues related to sustainability.
The house is managed by Residence Services as part of the East Campus Village.
