PAE-5: Climate Plan
Office of Sustainability
Does the institution have a plan to mitigate its greenhouse gas emissions that meets the criteria for this credit?:
A brief summary of the climate plan’s long-term goals:
The 2008, UAF Campus Sustainability Recommendations from the Chancellor's Sustainability Transition Team July 2008 outlines goals to address climate change on a long term basis. It recommends signing the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment and the Talloires Declaration. One of the nine issues addressed is energy. The goals for energy are: Reduce UAF's net CO2 emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 and Create a net zero CO2 emissions campus by 2060. Objectives are to promote energy conservation and produce and use renewable energy; many policies are associated with each objective.
For example, the goals for transportation that are related are: increasing the fuel economy of the UAF fleet, reducing dependence on personal vehicles, reducing the number of flights taken and offsetting emissions or air travel and making the campus more compact and providing more housing close to campus for students, faculty and staff.
In the 2010 Campus Master Plan, the UAF Campus Sustainability Recommendations from the Chancellor's Sustainability Transition Team's report is listed as a foundation for future sustainability efforts. From the 2010 Master Plan: "Sustainability will affect the triple bottom line of economy, environment and equity across all aspects of the university. A sustainability plan will be developed to supplement the CMP and map sustainability implementation actions for academics, research and operations.
The following activities have already been accomplished and can serve as the foundation of future work:
