A brief description of how multiple stakeholder groups were involved in developing the plan:
In the spring of 2008, the students in the NRRM 430 class in natural resources management planning took on the task of preparing a first draft of a UAF campus sustainability plan. They came from 4 different countries and many different states and put a good eal of research, energy, thought and creativity into the effort. Their collective talents broke a trail for the transition team.
In 2008, Chancellor Brian Rogers had the insight to enact a thorough investigation of UAF’s state regarding sustainability. The transition team was created with the expressed goal of creating a framework for a Plan for Sustainability that will continue the development necessary to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability to meet the needs of the future.
The final report, UAF Campus Sustainability Transition Team Final Report, was published in July of 2008, providing long term goals in nine areas as well as basic ideas on how to start making a difference in each area. The nine areas are: Energy, Transportation, Purchasing, Waste Management, Sustainable Building, Sustainable Education and Curriculum, Food Systems, and Institutions.

A brief description of how progress in meeting the plan’s goals is measured:
The Office of Sustainability was established in Fall 2010. Before that time there was no department overseeing the progress of the plan. One of the first duties of the Office of Sustainability was to develop the STARS report. This report will be used to set benchmarks for sustainability. The STARS report will be used to evaluate the current sustainability efforts and if necessary to develop an updated sustainability plan. The Student Sustainability Board/RISE board has discussed using the STARS reporting process as a strategic planning document.
