A brief description of the policies and/or programs:
Air travel is an essential mode of transportation for Alaskans. Because many UAF students live in remote villages, and some of our programs cater to individuals in the work force, there is a focus on offering distance delivery and online courses. Two of the programs that have high visibility are described below. Distance delivery is a prominent tool that reduces carbon emissions from air travel.
Distance Delivery and Online Options
The UAF School of Education offers a variety of options for distance and on-line learning.
Independent Learning is another option for students who need more flexibility in their learning than is possible in s semester-based schedule. There are over 100 courses in over 38 disciplines available. These courses are available on a year-round basis and student have one year to complete the coursework.
Wherever you are located within the State of Alaska, distance delivered courses are available for you. To find the most up-to-date information about what courses are being offered, go to the Distance Gateway website and take a look.
Overview
OIT's Video Conferencing Services group (OIT/VCS) manages the UA system wide video conferencing network. OIT/VCS is available to provide consulting, installation, training, scheduling and technical support. Whether your objective is education, or conserving resources for administrative meetings, OIT/VCS will help you meet your goals. Example video conferences include Thesis defenses, interviews, alternative expertise, collaboration with other institutions, and distance education. With connectivity to statewide, nationwide, and worldwide conferencing locations, VCS can bridge you to health organizations, state and federal governments, K-12 institutions, universities, and other video sites around the world.
For fiscal year 11, 7,084 hours were logged using video conferencing at UAF. 87%, or 6169 hours, were for academic purposes. 13%, 915 hours, were logged by the administration.
The Center for Distance Education and Independent Learning is part of the College of Rural Alaska. The Independent Learning Program (IL) is the oldest distance delivery program at the University of Alaska and has offered correspondence courses for more than forty years. There are more than 100 courses available, though the variety of courses is not designed to meet the requirements of any specific degree program. Some required courses for various degree programs, however, are included in the IL offerings.
