A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):
There historically have been 12 Office of Sustainability student positions (Interns). We are always looking for individual who are interested in and committed to sustainability. This includes individuals who want to promote green living and get others involved. Student can apply for positions through the UAF Human Resources Job Site.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):
Students are trained to oversee projects in their area of interest and assisted in educated the UAF community to increase sustainability.
The 12 general positions are:
•GARDENING REPRESENTATIVE - Hired to oversee sustainable practices encouraged and embraced, by and through, gardening on campus.
•PLASTICS RECYCLING REPRESENTATIVE - Hired to, in conjunction with the ASUAF recycling director, develop and maintain plastics recycling on campus.
•THERMOSTAT-PARKING REPRESENTATIVE - Hired to represent the student body's wishes to facilitate the implementation of thermostat technologies in campus infrastructure.
•GREEN BIKING REPRESENTATIVE - Hired to coordinate infrastructure expansion and development of biking programs on campus.
•VOLUNTEER PROGRAM REPRESENTATIVE - Hired to act as liaison between sustainability oriented programs to encourage public involvement in sustainability.
•CTC REPRESENTATIVE - Hired to act as a liaison between main campus sustainability efforts and CTC.
•PRE-PROCUREMENT OFFICER - Hired to ensure the quality and cost of items purchased by the SIREN fund meets the needs of the RISE Boards intentions, by assisting with accounting.
•RESIDENCE LIFE COORDINATOR - Hired to encourage dormitory sustainability, and oversee programs and events related to on campus living.
•VEHICLE OVERSIGHT REPRESENTATIVE - Hired to manage and monitor the efficiency of vehicles on campus, including rentals, buses, and personal and department vehicles.
•COMPOST REPRESENTATIVE - Hired to create and facilitate a composting program on campus.
•ELECTRICAL REPRESENTATIVE - Hired to monitor the efficiency of electrical usage on campus, including (but not limited to) lighting, computers, and alternative resource development.
•INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY OFFICER - Hired to create and administrate digital media to organize efforts and encourage collaboration between interested parties

Green Talk hosts are student workers from the Office of Sustainability (approx. 12 students work in the dept. at any time). They also host guest speakers from the UAF community including club leaders, students, staff, and faculty.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):
At UAF's college radio station, KSUA, student educators learn how to operate the radio equipment, how to make PSAs and mostly gain experience through doing. Students report on local national and international news regarding sustainability with an emphasis on campus life, the show broadcasts across all of Fairbanks but is preferred by college students for its alternative play lists.
The UAF Office of Sustainability students started a weekly radio show on KSUA call Green Talk on 91.5 FM. The program, which airs weekly on Thursdays from 4-6 p.m., highlights sustainability happenings on campus, upcoming events and ideas for ways listeners can recycle and reduce energy use. You can listen via the web weekly by following the links at http://ksua.uaf.edu.

The radio station is owned by the Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the student union, which then grants permission to students and other groups (students receive a priority) to use blocks of time for a show.

Student employees are training in environmental ethics, leave without a trace and outdoor safety as well as how to lead groups in outdoor activities.

Resiliance and Adaptation Program

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (All other programs):
The resilience and adaptation program is an interdisciplinary training and education program of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, focusing on sustainability in times of rapid change. The Resilience and Adaptation Program prepares scholars, policy-makers, community leaders, and managers to address issues of sustainability in an integrated fashion.
Through coursework, an internship experience, thesis research, and other training, students enrolled in PhD and masters programs address a major challenge facing humanity: Sustaining the desirable features of Earth's social-ecological systems at a time of rapid change. Students are self selecting graduate and PhD students.
The concepts of resilience, adaptation, vulnerability, and transformation serve as unifying themes in research examining global-to-local interactions.
The program prepares students for positions of leadership in academia, government, non-government organizations, education, Native organizations and agency management.
Alaska Natives and members of other minority groups are encouraged to apply.

Each student participates in a set of core training activities that includes classes, an internship experience, seminars, an annual retreat, and other special events.
This training program builds on existing disciplinary graduate programs at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) in ecology, biology and wildlife, natural resources management, economics, political science, geology, geophysics, engineering, anthropology, and other degree granting programs.

Faculty members from the social and natural sciences at the University of Alaska participate in RAP as graduate advisors, committee members, core course instructors, guest lectures, and resources to students. Faculty members at our university are easily accessible to RAP students and demonstrate a strong commitment to mentoring and collaborating in research and/or providing informal input and advice. The faculty members listed below can serve students who are applying to the program and seeking to identify a graduate advisor.
More than 59 individuals of UAF faculty participate in this program.
