A brief description of the mechanisms through which students have an avenue to participate in one or more governance bodies:

The University of Alaska's governance system provides a forum and mechanism whereby faculty, staff, and students may present issues and positions for discussion throughout the university system; whereby they may seek mutual support, may speak with a common voice and may act together on issues affecting the general welfare of the university system community as a whole. The governance system is established by the University of Alaska Board of Regents Policy 03.01.01. Voting members are elected to unified constituent groups by their peers. UAA's Faculty Senate, APT, Classified Council, and Union of Students constituent groups provide voting representation to the University Assembly. Representative groups provide representation to the system wide governance bodies. Alumni Association also exist at the three universities.

UAA Governance (made up of faculty, classified staff, APT [administrative, professional, and technical] staff, and student constituent groups):

Officially represents the university in community matters which affect the University's general welfare and its educational purposes and effectiveness;
Serves as an advisory, coordinating and legislative body having as a primary function the making of recommendations regarding policy and regulation;
Provides consulting services to the UAA Chancellor, Provost and Vice Chancellors, System Governance Council, President, and
Board of Regents; and serves as an instrument by which information of interest and concern may be freely collected, shared, and discussed by the university community.


Is there at least one student representative on the institution’s governing body who was elected by peers or appointed by a representative student body or organization?:
Yes

A brief description of student representation on the governing body, including how the representatives are selected:

The Board will consist of five (5) students and one (1) UAA faculty or staff
member. The faculty or staff member will be chosen by the Board. Two (2)
students will be elected from the seated Assembly by a majority vote. Three (3)
students will be appointed by the Vice-President and confirmed by the
Assembly by a majority vote. All students serving on the Board must be
registered for three (3) or more credits and have paid the Student Government
fee.


Do students have a formal role in decision-making in regard to the following?:

The APT and Classified Councils play a vital role at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
The mission of the Council is to serve as a center for input and dissemination of information.
The Council provides opportunities for concerns and recommendations to reach the appropriate channels for consideration.
Membership is comprised of representatives of the university staff elected by the Council membership.

Yes

All governance representation is selected through a vote of their peers.

The purposes of the Faculty Senate are

a. To provide official representation for faculty of the University of Alaska
Anchorage in matters that affect the general welfare of the University and its
research, creative activities, and educational programs.

b. To serve as an agency by which information of general concern and interest
to the University of Alaska Anchorage faculty may be freely collected,
disseminated and discussed.

c. To function as the legislative body having primary authority to initiate,
develop, review and recommend policy of the University of Alaska
Anchorage, including but not limited to

(1) Academic Matters

(a) degree requirements,
(b) program approval,
(c) course approval,
(d) admissions policies,
(e) instructional policies,
(f) transfer policies,
(g) academic advising,
(h) assessment of incoming students,
(i) outcomes of courses,
(j) distance education,
(k) e-learning,
(l) library,
(m) conduct of research, scholarship, and creative activities
(n) mentorship of research, scholarship, and creative activities
(o) other matters directly concerned with the academic programs of
the University of Alaska Anchorage.

(2) Faculty Matters
(a) tenure,
(b) promotion,
(c) leave,
(d) appointment, reappointment and termination,
(e) professional ethics,
(f) faculty development,
(g) grants,
(h) other matters affecting the welfare of the faculty.
