The Books of the Year program started in 2006 as part of a Ford Foundation Difficult Dialogues initiative.
The 2009/2010 theme was responding to climate change in Alaska and the books selected were "Shopping for Porcupine: A Life in Arctic Alaska" by Seth Kantner and "The Whale and the Supercomputer: On the Northern Front of Climate Change" by Charles Wohlforth.
