A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):
UAA's Director for the Center for Community Engagement and Learning (CCEL) and a professor of several Environment & Society classes contacted two students who are very active in organizing and disseminating information about our new campus garden. CCEL establishes and oversees internships for students. The majors of these two students require that they have community service credit hours. The students were approached about whether they would like to do an internship and receive community service credit hours for their work on the student garden.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):
The students academic accomplishments are overseen by Shannon Donovan. She acts as their faculty advisor. They are supervised and their work on the garden is monitored by Paula Williams, Sustainability Director, as their work supervisor.
The students have weekly meetings lasting between 1.5 to 2 hours with the work supervisor where their past week's work is reviewed and problems that have come up are discussed, as well as possible solutions to the problems.

A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):
A faculty advisor and work supervisor have been provided as staff. The Office of Sustainability has donated $300 to supplies for the garden.
It is anticipated that the Environment & Society program will pay the students as fellows starting Fall semester.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (2nd program):
The student educators were employees of the Recycling Program and volunteers from the student Sustainability Club and from various classes on campus.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):
The students were given a briefing on what can and cannot be recycled in the Anchorage area as well as how the recycled material must be processed before recycling (beverage bottles and cans must be empty, for example). They were provided with a fact sheet to provide to students, a quiz for the students to take and metal water bottles to distribute to students if they passed the quiz (3 out of 4 questions answered correctly).

Staff: Sustainability Director and Recycling Director provided training on recycling facts, Sustainability Administrative Assistant arranged for tables to be provided at various sites around campus and the Sustainability Office provided water bottles for distribution.
