Human Dimensions and Societal Impacts

The focus of this track is on how humans affect the environment and the broad-scale impacts of human actions from a local to global level.This is a flexible concentration allowing students to take classes from several departments to gain a holistic understanding of the relationship between humans and the environment.

Environmental Social Science

A brief description of the undergraduate minor, concentration or certificate (2nd program):

This track examines the co-evolution and complex interdependence of humans and the natural world, exploring how environmental conditions influence human societies, and conversely, how societies impact and alter their environments. Emphasis is placed equally on the the social structures that impact the causes and consequences of environmental problems (e.g., global inequality, racial discrimination), as well as social responses to environmental change and disruption (e.g., public opinion, environmental policy).

Environmental Engineering

A brief description of the undergraduate minor, concentration or certificate (3rd program):

The undergraduate environmental engineering option provides an education necessary for many aspects of environmental management and remediation. Students are introduced to water quality, atmospheric pollution, environmental systems, and statistics. The student can take courses in industrial waste, environmental sampling, and erosion as technical electives. Faculty promote an interdisciplinary approach to the solution of complex environmental problems. CE graduates with a major in Environmental Engineering are prepared for careers with government regulatory and advisory agencies, industries, and consulting organizations concerned with environmental problems.
