A brief description of the institution’s main campus and other aspects of the institutional boundary used to complete this report:

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is an urban institution comprised of undergraduate, graduate, and research schools and facilities, as well as the UAB Medicine system including UAB Hospital, The Kirklin Clinic, UAB Highlands, and other outlying locations. UAB's institutional boundary for the purposes of this STARS report includes all buildings within the contiguous downtown campus of UAB, including all research, academic, clinical, and administrative buildings, but does not include in-patient and ambulatory hospital and clinical space not contiguous to our main campus. Examples of non-contiguous facilities include UAB Medicine Hoover, UAB Medicine Gardendale, and other outlying UAB Medicine-affiliated facilities.

Which of the following features are present on campus and which are included within the institutional boundary?:
Present? Included?
Agricultural school No No
Medical school Yes Yes
Other professional school with labs and clinics (e.g. dental, nursing, pharmacy, public health, veterinary) Yes Yes
Satellite campus No No
Farm larger than 5 acres or 2 hectares No No
Agricultural experiment station larger than 5 acres or 2 hectares No No
Hospital Yes Yes

The rationale for excluding any features that are present from the institutional boundary:

Outlying (satellite) clinical facilities have entirely separate energy and water metering, dining options, purchasing streams, and other key metrics required for the assessment. Inclusion of these facilities, due to the cumbersome nature of the reporting for each separate facility, would likely reduce the accuracy of our response. If and when more of those facilities are streamlined with sole source contracts, standard building automation, and other centralized features, they will be incorporated in future reports.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

While including UAB hospital and clinical facilities made reporting significantly more complicated, UAB regularly asserts statistics regarding size and economic impact inclusive of the hospital to emphasize the scope of the enterprise. Not including these facilities would have resulted in a score not truly indicative of the sustainability program of the UAB enterprise. Those responsible for this assessment have made every effort to provide accurate responses to credits for which the campus and hospital have separate organizations, such as dining.
