First-year students Yes

63

A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):
All new students (freshmen and transfer students; graduate students do not have a standard orientation) are required to attend the Goin' Green Orientation. UAB Sustainability trains all orientation leaders prior to the start of Orientation to incorporate sustainability into all facets of orientation. At the beginning of the orientation, students are shown a PowerPoint Presentation that outlines the expectations and resources for the all UAB students; there are several slides dedicated to sustainability. Led by orientation leaders, the students and parents are then given a tour of campus and sustainable features of campus are highlighted (i.e recycling, water filling stations, local and organic food in the Campus Dining, solar panels). Additionally, orientation leaders inform the students about the sustainability efforts that are made on campus (i.e the solar decathlon house, the pollinator gardens, the Zip Bikes, etc.) and how students can participate in operational, curricular, and co-curricular sustainability opportunities.
