Iceland and Dr. Tucker: “Creating a Culture of Sustainability”
HC 395/ STH 299
Spring Semester of 2018. Taught in conjunction with Study Abroad to Iceland
Dr. Diane Tucker
* Examine sustainability from a perspective that integrates environmental, technical and social aspects of creating sustainable solutions.
* Analyze sustainability issues using multiple sources, including primary academic literature
* Develop a proposal for the implementation of a sustainable solution that includes analysis of benefits and barriers and attention to the process of change
* The course will adopt a systems approach to sustainability, analyzing various aspects of sustainability and examining the “triple bottom line” of environmental, economic and social concerns. Sustainability is defined as meeting our needs in a manner that does not compromise the opportunity for future generations to meet their needs.
* The class will visit sites in the local area that can inform us about sustainable choices. Each student will develop a question or project that will integrate the study abroad experience in Iceland with local issues and prepare a publication reporting the analysis
