Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
Yes
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution, including how each program addresses the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability:
Three faculty--from Science and Technology Honors program (psychology home dept), Civil Engineering, and English--hosted a study abroad trip in May of 2015 to the Netherlands and Egypt to study sustainable features of those communities. Prior to departure, the students and trip leaders met with stakeholders around Birmingham to understand some of our sustainability challenges so that their exploration could be more impactful upon return to Birmingham. The students mainly focused on food waste, food quality, food accessibility, water runoff, water pollution, water use and reuse, materials and design, multi-use spaces, and community hubs. Their final project involved describing a sustainability feature found on the trip and presenting how this feature might be incorporated in Birmingham.
