A brief description of the sustainable operations and maintenance policy/program and/or O+M rating system(s) used:

Université Laval has a central automatic control system for heating, ventilation, and cooling. This central system manages energy use across all campus buildings. In addition, detection systems have been installed in most buildings to turn the lights off automatically between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Université Laval assess the energy performance of every building against that of its best-in-class buildings, taking into account the different usages.

In addition, for major renovations or new constructions, Université Laval applies objectives that are 20% more stringent than those of National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings 2017 published by the Government of Canada. Laval University is analyzing renewable energy transition. Since September 2018, 8% of the natural gaz from fossil issue as been replaced by a renewable natural gas, produced locally from biomethanisation from organic matter residues. Also, the institution uses 56% of renewable energy for his activities, if we consider hydroelectricity as a renewable energy.

Buildings energy consumption are analysed monthly to make sure that they use the energy that they supposed to use. An energy benchmarking as been done for each building for the last three years and the monthly energy consumption is compared to the benchmark. Monthly, a committee analyses the building consumption. If an anormal consumption is find, the committee works to find the issue and repair the building and make sure that the building consumes the energy that it needs.

Université Laval also uses monitoring methods to track water consumption on campus once a month. The data is compared with normal consumption per building, which means water leaks can be identified and repaired promptly.

Cleaning contracts also include specifications about the products to use, the energy consumption of equipment and the dust control requirements.
