Université Laval works closely with the City of Québec on several projects, including sustainable mobility. As a true crossroads for public transportation, the campus makes Université Laval an important player in the field of sustainable mobility.
In recent years, the City of Quebec has undertaken a great deal of work for the implementation of a future tramway. Université Laval is collaborating with the City on the section that will run through the campus in order to provide the university and city community with access to a sustainable and quality transportation network.
Unfortunately, the integration of this infrastructure will result in the loss of many trees on campus and elsewhere in Quebec City. Although reforestation actions are planned, the City of Quebec and Université Laval have chosen to go further in their biodiversity efforts by creating the Research Chair on Urban Trees and their Environment (CRAUM).
This research partnership will allow us to go even further than what the City of Quebec's 2015-2025 Tree Vision already proposes in terms of urban forest management, particularly in the context of major infrastructure projects.
More specifically, the CRAUM aims to develop knowledge and design new methods and tools for the conservation and integration of trees and all their components (crown, trunk, roots and soil) in the urban environment.
Several reforestation sites linked to the work of the tramway will be used for the CRAUM. Starting in 2023, the plantations on campus will be dedicated to them in order to carry out data surveys, analyses and other work. This will be a unique living laboratory considering the rare opportunity that the implementation of a streetcar in the heart of a city represents.
Through this collaboration, the University is actively participating in Quebec City's collective efforts to facilitate and promote sustainable mobility. Moreover, together, they are positioning themselves in the field of urban forests in order to improve the state of biodiversity in Quebec City.
