Université Laval has developed its own sustainable development survey that includes questions to assess sustainability culture of the campus community (all questions, except #3, 5, 6, 7, and 14 that assess sustainability literacy). This survey was developed in September 2015 with the involvement of all the sustainable development stakeholders.

A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:

The online sustainable development survey was sent by email. It was administered in November 2015 to undergraduate students (first and last year) and to all graduate students in April 2016. To answer the online survey, the students had to enter their personal ID. This unique identifier has two functions: make sure the respondent is a Université Laval’s student and compile the respondents’ profiles (program, year of study, gender, etc.).

After closing the survey, an analysis was run to make sure that the respondents accurately reflect the members of the entire population (representative subset of the statistical population). Both times, the subset was representative. The surveys were only sent to students, not the entire campus community (students, staff and faculty).

The same surveys will be sent each year at the same period to the target populations. For example, the survey for the undergraduate will be sent in November annually to first and last year students. Which means that the first year undergraduate students surveyed in November 2015, will be surveyed again in November 2017.


A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment, including a description of any measurable changes over time:

November 2015 - assessment of sustainability culture to undergraduate students
- 92% of respondents consider significant the Université Laval commitment to sustainability;
- 83.6% use more sustainable commuting options;
- 87.4% say they know how to sort properly their waste;
- 53% read the sustainability newsletter.

April 2016 - assessment of sustainability culture to graduate students
- 80% of graduate students think their education in sustainability when entering labor market;
- 32% know the Institut Hydro-Québec en environnement, développement et société (EDS Institute);
- 67% know the Leadership and Sustainable Development Scholarships;
- 46% are involved in a social cause.

For now, no measurable changes were observed over time.
