A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:

The organization that collects our used computer and electronic equipment (Atelier coup de main - http://www.coupdemain.ca/) adheres to our Policy on the acquisition of goods and services and on the awarding of construction contracts.

It is audited each year by our campus’s sustainable procurement advisor. She reviews its environmental and labour practices (health and safety) as well as the computer security procedures its follows when removing data from computer equipment for subsequent reuse.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:

Computer and electronic equipment is reused on campus or collected for reuse by a social reintegration organization. Equipment that cannot be reused is collected for recycling.

The procedure is described here:
http://www.si.ulaval.ca/fileadmin/sim/documents/Documents/2.0_Demandes_services/2.3_Biens_excedentaires/Proc-GestFinDeVie-TI-Electro-V_0_3.pdf

The procedure outlines special measures to protect confidential information that could be stored in electronic media. In 2011 the program kept over 41 tons of computer equipment out of the recycling stream, including 1,235 monitors, 1,566 towers, and over 15 tons of other equipment.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for student-generated materials :

Members of the university community can drop off their unused computer and electronic equipment free of charge on campus at Coopérative Zone (www.zone.coop). The university then sends the equipment to Atelier coup de main, the campus’s official e-waste recovery organization. http://www.coupdemain.ca/
