A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

Canada’s first carbon-neutral bridge projects

In June 2011, the longest wood girder arch bridge in Québec was inaugurated in Montmorency Forest. By choosing to offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated during construction on this one-of-a-kind bridge and on another smaller bridge by planting 2,650 spruce trees, Université Laval now has bragging rights to the first carbon-neutral bridge projects in Canada.

The 33 meter-long wood girder arch bridge that the University had built by engineering firm CIMA + in the Montmorency Forest won top prize in the corporate category in the 2012 Novae eco-design contest.

This integrated sustainable development initiative combined an innovative design with a focus on reducing the greenhouse gas emissions generated during the project. Emissions were reduced 44% thanks to the use of a local material—eastern spruce—and 2,650 trees were planted in the forest to offset the 154 tons of CO2 emitted during construction.
