Université Laval amended its study regulations to address sustainable development in undergraduate programs. Section 100c, paragraph 3 requires that “all students…be introduced…to sustainable development issues so that they may act responsibly with respect to their environment.”
In its policy, the university defines sustainable development as follows:
“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the current population without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. At the university, this means ensuring a sustainable quality of life for individuals and their communities by balancing investments in the living environment (environment), lifestyle (society), and standard of living (economy).”

The inventory of undergraduate courses related to the environment and sustainable development was completed in May 2010. There are currently 221 courses that have been identified as sustainability-related courses for the purposes of AASHE STARS accreditation.
The abbreviation “DDU ” is used to refer to 11 courses whose main focus is sustainable development (the sustainability-focused courses).
Université Laval is working to create sustainable development analytical tools for course and program self-assessment. These tools will be rolled out in 2013–2014 and will be used to reassess the data provided with this application.
