Third Point of Distinction

Name of a third highlighted program/initiative/accomplishment:
A Pilot Partnership Research Project in response to the Pandemic

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
The context related to COVID-19 has highlighted an environmental issue with the growing use of procedure masks and, to a greater extent, of all personal protective equipment (PPE). In partnership with CRB Innovations, MGA Environnement, and the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS, the Université de Sherbrooke has implemented a pilot project for the recovery of procedure masks, which promote the regional circular economy while being part of a sustainable development approach. The research teams have developed a process for converting PPE into a recoverable composite using plastic laboratory waste from the Université de Sherbrooke and the region's hospitals as raw materials. For the UdeS alone, more than one million masks have been recovered.
