Since 2014, the Université de Sherbrooke has a motor vehicle fleet management system guideline in place. As part of the Sustainable Development Policy, the Université de Sherbrooke has implemented a process to modify consumption and production patterns in order to minimize their negative impacts on society and the environment.
Through the implementation of this guideline, the University combines environmental, economic and organizational aspects to implement a vehicle fleet management system that is consistent with the directions of its Sustainable Development Policy and the Provincial Government Procurement Policy for Light Vehicles (i.e. electrification of vehicle fleets).
In this regard, the University recognizes specific guiding principles such as:
• The vehicles fleet must contribute as much as possible to the effort to reduce greenhouse gases, regardless of the use to which each vehicle is put.
• The reduction of greenhouse gases generated by the vehicle fleet can be achieved by rationalizing vehicle use and by improving the ecological performance of vehicles.
• Engine power and all-wheel drive are not the preferred criteria as a smaller engine and standard traction can be functional and safe. Therefore, the University will select, for instance, electric or rechargeable vehicles, as prescribed in the Provincial Government Procurement Policy for Light Vehicles.
The motor vehicle fleet management system that meet the diverse needs of the university community is a major process that has a significant impact on the University's ecological footprint.
