The UTEC Sustainability Innovation Hub in Durazno transforms a former hospital kitchen, located within a building designated as a National Historic Monument, into a multifunctional space that promotes entrepreneurship and innovation with a sustainability focus. This unique project combines heritage preservation with forward-thinking sustainability practices.
Key features include:
• A coworking space for sustainability-focused entrepreneurs and established businesses.
• An open laboratory for digital fabrication to support innovation and collaboration.
• Renewable energy infrastructure, including photovoltaic panels supplying 30% of the building's energy needs.
• Rainwater harvesting systems for sanitary use.
• Energy-efficient features such as LED lighting and double-glazed windows for thermal comfort.
The building was inaugurated in December 2024. Acting as a bridge between academia, local communities, and industries, this initiative aims to foster sustainability-driven projects and regional development. Positive measurable outcomes include resource efficiency, revitalization of a historic space, and strengthened community engagement through sustainability-focused entrepreneurship.
