Local advocacy

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:
We implemented the guidelines (policy) of zero single-use plastics and it was presented to the Medellin council (local government body) for advancement as a public policy for the restriction of these elements. In addition, it was established as a good practice at the level of public and private universities in the region and the country, recognized and awarded by the Colombia network global pact. This is how the practice began to be implemented in other institutions at the national level.

University also as a body participate in policy making at local, regional, national and/or global level to implement programs and policies regarding other SDG´s and sustainability dimensions (social, environmental and economics):

Senior Adult Policy: Based on two investigations carried out by the Graduate School, it has been possible to participate in the formulation of Senior Adult Policy of the department of Antioquia, based on the research on the elderly led by Dr. Doris Cardona:

Through an association agreement between the department of Antioquia and the CES university, a diagnosis of the health situation and living conditions of the elderly was made.

Zero single-use plastics guidelines: We were the first university in he region to implement the zero single-use plastics guidelines. This experience was shared with more than 15 organizations, including the municipal council to establish public policy on plastics and the discussion of the Senate of the Republic was held at CES University.

Comprehensive early childhood care policy of Medellín: participation of experts (teachers and researchers) from the CES university in the formulation and review of the policy.

Informal Street Vendor Policy: Policy formulation for the informal street vendors based on the doctoral thesis and research led by Dr. María Garzón. Invitation of the seventh commission of the Congress of the Republic in order to present the research work of the doctoral thesis to support the adjustments and changes to the national public policy of informal street vendors "venteros".

Caregivers program: The project with the municipality of Envigado, has been developed for three years. This model has been developed with resources from the participatory budget.
This program starts the development of the caregiver policy by training and certifying as caregivers those persons who carry out actions with individuals, family and community.
This project contributes to the reduction of poverty, and includes: training, education, accompaniment, follow-up of primary caregivers and those hired directly to accompany.

We support global initiatives such as race to zero, the United Nations Global Compact, the Climate Reality Project, supporting the creation of public policies that advance sustainability, active participation in campaigns aiming to change public policy, and discussions with legislators in regard to the above.
