Restriction of single use plastics

A brief description of the campaign:

The CES University of Medellín became the first in the Aburrá Valley to say goodbye to straws, PET bottles, disposable plates and cutlery, all of which are considered single-use plastics as a contribution to sustainability. Sensitization and transition work was carried out for seven months: "it was necessary for the suppliers who manage the cafeterias to make a gradual change."


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

Due to the implementation of these guidelines, the reduction of single-use plastics is 100%.

With the practices of restricting single-use plastics and correct separation at the source, a reduction of 34,097 Kg (15%) in ordinary waste (unusable) was achieved.

We are pioneers in the region with the implementation of guidelines for the restriction of single-use plastics. Receiving regional, national and international recognition:
o Space in the Medellín Municipal Council for the socialization of good practices.
o Recognition of the good practices of sustainable development of the Global Compact Colombia in SDG 12.
o International recognition with Zanjan University, Iran.
o Recognition by the Regional Autonomous Corporation of the Center of Antioquia, CORANTIOQUIA, with the Ecouniversity Seal "For the implementation of good environmental sustainability practices on its university campus, with differentiating elements that go beyond compliance with legal regulations."

Sustainable Business Mobility Plan- App Try my ride

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

As part of the commitment acquired by the University, the Sustainable Business Mobility Plan was implemented, in which different strategies converge whose focal point is the reduction of CO2 emissions from internal combustion vehicles, in addition to improving mobility conditions in the areas of influence of the University.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

As a reduction goal, a 20% reduction was established by 2020, of the total emissions generated by the different modes of transportation used by employees. Among the strategies are electrolier (charging point for electric vehicles and bicycles), electric bicycle rental, business route, which, on average monthly, serves 1,240 administrators, teachers, and students, and the mobile APP for vehicle sharing (Try My Ride) thanks to which we have avoided 744 Kg of CO2, the equivalent of 40 planted trees.
