A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:
Unity College has several community partners who focus on sustainability and the like. Three over-arching themes consistently arise from our partners; energy efficiency, food systems, and sustainable land use. One partner focused on energy efficiency is Energizing a Community, which also partners with Unity Barn Raisers and Time & Tide. Projects of Energizing a Community are Neighbor Warming Neighbor, a speaker series, and the Unity Energy Committee. Neighbor Warming Neighbor’s primary mission is to weatherize homes and to prepare homes for the harsh Maine winters by sending volunteers, many being students, faculty and staff, to homes around the community. The college’s partnership with Veggies for All is one of our more recently formed community partnerships. Veggies for All is a another project of the Unity Barn Raisers that aims to provide rural, under-privileged families with fresh vegetables from gardens on and around the campus grounds. Sebasticook Regional Land Trust (SRLT) is an organization that was formed in 2004 to conserve the rich, wild and working landscape of Central Maine, surrounding the Sebasticook River Watershed. Students, faculty and staff volunteer their time, knowledge and effort towards this organization providing services that would otherwise be absent due to resource and personnel constraints and limitations.
