A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level:
On September 20, 2019, UWC-USA facilitated the participation of approximately 160 students and staff members in a Climate Strike at the State Capitol in Santa Fe. The College administration supported this action by providing transportation, packed lunches, faculty chaperones, and by allowing students to participate without being marked absent. Individual students and faculty members have continued to participate in subsequent preparatory meetings and civil actions, including civil disobedience, in attempts to influence State-level policies related to its support for the fossil fuel industry. Furthermore, the UWC-USA President has sent letters of support for renewable energy policy measures to State Representatives, such as the Community Solar Act (HB9, SB143) during the 2020 NM legislative session. Please see the attached document. Student participation in advocacy is part of our experiential education programming in the areas of Sustainability and Constructive Engagement of Conflict.
