The cultural assessment was developed during the baselining for updating UMMS climate action and sustainability plan in the fall of 2019. It was developed to assess the UMMS community's understanding of sustainability, sustainability values, and interest and knowledge in UMMS sustainability efforts.

The cultural assessment was administered online through email outreach and the sustainability newsletter to staff, students, and faculty. The survey has 500 responses broken out to 12% student responses, 20% faculty responses, and 30% staff responses and the rest of the responses identifying as other specific or unspecific staff roles.
A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment, including a description of any measurable changes over time:
The results show that the UMMS community is in general not aware of UMMS climate commitments and sustainability efforts, but the people who responded care about climate change and think that UMMS has a role and responsibility in addressing climate mitigation and adaptation.
