A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate, including efforts made during the previous three years:
Recycling bins that collected ridged plastic, glass, metal and paper are located throughout campus. Pre-consumer food waste is collected and donated to a local farmer for animal feed. Additionally, there is a S.W.A.P (Surpus with a Purpose) program which helps divert used office/lab supplies from the waste stream by facilitating reuse.

Pre-consumer food waste is donated to a local pig farmer to use as animal feed. Every Friday the farmer arrives at UMASS Medical School and picks up about 200 gallons of pre-consumer food waste.
