A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
UMass Medical School has taken an innovate approach to sustainable cleaning. Rather than using purchased cleaning chemicals to clean floors and surfaces, UMMS has invested in the Orbio onsite generation system (OGS) to create a muti-surface cleaning product from tap water. The Orbio multi-surface cleaning solution is created when softened tap water and a small amount of salt are combined and the mixture flow through an electrolyte cell creating a 0.05% sodium hydroxide cleaning solution. Creating this non-hazardous cleaning solution onsite minimizes the need for harsher cleaning chemicals, and reduces waste and transportation related emissions by minimizing the number of containers of cleaning solutions brought on campus as Orbio water is dispensed into reusable spray bottles or directly into cleaning equipment. Additionally, since the Orbio multi-surface cleaner has no GHS hazard classification and does not meet the definition of a hazardous substance or preparation as defined by the OSHA and described in 29 CFR 1910.1200(d), UMMS is improving the health and wellbeing of our employees by minimizing exposure to hazardous cleaning chemicals.
