A brief description of the practice:
For School of Medicine students, all volunteering is listed in the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (the dean's letter) which is a required part of residency application. Some volunteering is done under the auspices of the optional enrichment program (ie the volunteering is given optional enrichment course credit). OEE's are listed on the transcript with a grade of ##. The La Romana trip can be done as part of a Flexible Clinical Experience so that would also be listed on the transcript and carries graduation credit. For the Graduate School of Nursing, there is a Community Service Learning (CSL) component to the Societal Forces class and the students have to commit to a minimum of 45 hours towards a service learning project that is part of the course objectives. They get credit for these hours and the credits are noted on their transcripts as CSL.
