SINA is a partnership between Connecticut Children’s, Hartford Hospital and Trinity College. SINA’s mission is to work cooperatively with community stakeholders to restore economic vitality and improve the quality of life for the people who live, work, play, and study in the neighborhoods of South Central Hartford.
Some programs SINA is working on include:
- The Walk to Work Program (WtW) is our employment program in which SINA helps neighborhood residence find jobs at our institutions and outside organizations. 119 positions have been filled since 2018.
- The Homeownership Incentive Program (HIP) provides financial incentives to employees from the three SINA institutions to purchase a home in the neighborhood. 48 homes have been purchased in total so far - 7 Trinity College employees have participated.
Awards and Scholarships to recognize residents for their leadership and help them afford higher education. Examples include
- Kelly Styles STEM Scholarship - One scholarship in the total amount of $3,000, will be awarded to a graduating senior continuing their education in a post-secondary program related to Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The student will receive $2,000 the first year and $1,000 the second year if they remain in good standing and continue a STEM-related field.
- REACH Book Author Contest - Students in grades K-5 are encouraged to write and illustrate a fictional story with the theme of Community Heroes. Selected books will be displayed at Hartford Public Library Park Library @ the Lyric local author’s shelf. Winning entries will receive a professionally printed copy of their book and get acknowledged at an awards ceremony.
- The Neighborhood Service Awards Program - recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Hartford’s southside neighborhoods
- Ivan A. Backer Scholarship - Three graduating seniors each receive $4000 scholarships to continue their education at accredited 4-year post secondary programs. The scholarships are awarded at $1,000 per academic year for four years, as long as the student is in good standing.
