The promotion or tenure guidelines or policies:
The A&P Committee thus recognizes efforts to build, support, and partner with diverse communities, on and off campus. Accordingly, candidates are encouraged (but not required) to address in their statement how they have contributed to DEI practices and/or community engagement in their teaching, scholarship, and service.

There is no stand-alone definition of what a contribution to DEI entails or which populations must be served; it is up to each candidate and the department/program to contextualize their work in this area. For example, in terms of teaching,
one might discuss the adoption of inclusive teaching strategies or materials that give voice to marginalized views; advising and mentoring of students from underrepresented groups; or the ways in which a faculty member encourages debate
and a variety of perspectives to flourish in the classroom. This is an invitation to make visible contributions that might otherwise be invisible.
Community engagement can also permeate and shape teaching; scholarship and creative activity; as well as service. According to the Carnegie Foundation, community engagement refers to collaboration of a faculty member with “larger
communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.” These efforts, which are not unidirectional, can take a great deal of time. This
work, moreover, often intersects with members of historically underrepresented groups, and it can cross traditional disciplinary boundaries; it can involve local or global communities. Review committees should value the significance of
community engagement in a candidate’s full body of work.
