Majors, degrees and certificate programs

Does the institution offer at least one sustainability-focused major, degree, or certificate program for undergraduate students?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused undergraduate degree program:
Environmental Science

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
Environmental science merges the natural environment with human actions. We therefore encourage our students to take relevant courses in the social sciences and humanities as well to learn how humans have shaped their environments or, in return, are shaped by the world in which they live. Relevant courses may include classes in public policy and law and environmental economics, but also classes in history or English. Again, students can choose from a large (and often changing) list of relevant courses across a wide range of disciplines to customize the program to their interests and career goals. The Bachelor of Arts option allows students to take even more advanced courses in the social sciences and humanities.

Name of the sustainability-focused, undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
Urban Studies

None
A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
Urban Studies program is to help students build an interdisciplinary understanding of how urban dynamics shape both global interdependence and local spaces through a rigorous four-year program of classroom learning, field research, study away, and other forms of urban engagement in Hartford and beyond. The Urban Studies program provides academic strengthening of Trinity’s strong links with Hartford as a distinctive asset, and it is a critical supporting mechanism for the College’s urban-global mission and urban-global curricular emphasis.

The Urban Studies Major provides a broadly interdisciplinary understanding of how urban dynamics shape both global interdependence and local spaces. It emphasizes how cities are increasingly critical to the organization of economic, social, and cultural activities that shape and transform human experience.

Name of the sustainability-focused, undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
Public Policy and Law

None
A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
The Public Policy and Law major is an interdisciplinary program in which students learn and practice methods and modes of thinking required to understand and become actively engaged in the analysis of legal and public policy issues. Grounded in the liberal arts, the Program provides students with the tools of analysis in social science, law, and the humanities needed to understand the substance of public policy concerns. The program seeks cultivate in our students the cast of mind necessary to be good citizens who will play useful parts in the public world.

One of the learning goals of the program is to acquire depth in a substantive area of public policy: Policy-specific electives and a supervised internship in a substantive public policy field (e.g., health, environmental, legal, or arts policy) develop depth of knowledge.

Minors and concentrations

Does the institution offer one or more sustainability-focused minors or concentrations for undergraduate students?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused undergraduate minor or concentration:
Marine Studies

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:
The unifying theme for this minor is the sea and the multifaceted relationship to it enjoyed by people in the past, present, and future. The diverse influences of the sea on humankind find expression in history, literature, political science, economics, and the natural sciences. Courses in these disciplines, with the sea as common focus, provide a coherent and interdisciplinary perspective on the marine environment. This minor differs from other minors because it depends on courses offered in one of two off-campus programs, the Williams College-Mystic Seaport Maritime Studies Program and the Sea Education Association’s SEA Semester program. These off-campus programs usually accept only sophomores or juniors. Acceptance into the Marine Studies minor is contingent upon admission to the Williams-Mystic or SEA Semester Programs. Students must earn a minimum of C- for all courses counted toward the minor.
