A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:
Connections College for Living — Volunteers from Transylvania and the Lexington area teach and assist with classes for developmentally delayed adults. Classes include athletic activities, dance, artistic activities, and improving social skills.
Great American Cleanup — A partnership with several Lexington neighborhood associations and other Lexington community groups for a neighborhood clean-up.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service — We celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day on, not a day off. Student groups and individuals spend a day participating in dozens of service projects throughout the community.
Peanut Butter and Jelly Club — Students meet weekly to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to address local hunger issues through direct service. Sandwiches are delivered to the HopeMobile, the mobile outreach program of the Hope Center, to be distributed to the local homeless population.
RiTE — Students spend the week immediately before Fall term doing poverty and education related community service in Lexington.
Transylvania Community Garden- functions as both an educational space and garden for community members, students, and faculty
Community Engagements through the Arts- a class that operates directly with the influence of the surrounding community to make art and social commentary on history, present, and future of North Lexington. Is directly connected to both community members, Neighborhood associations, and local businesses.
Broke Spoke - The Transy Bike Shop manager and other bike shop staff regularly volunteer at Broke Spoke, a community bike shop. This helps a local non-profit doing awesome work, while providing training for our bike shop employees.
FoodChain - TEAL, the student group focused on environmental issues, volunteers weekly at this local food organization located just a few blocks from campus.
Keep Lexington Beautiful - The Sustainability Director serves on the KLB commission.
