National Water Vision for Canada - In November 2018, Ryerson Urban Water partnered with Simon Fraser University’s Pacific Water Research Centre to host a water symposium at the 2018 Canadian Science Policy Conference in Ottawa.

Salt in Urbanized Water Sheds - Ryerson Urban Water & Ryerson Facilities Management and Development (FMD) have partnered with WWF-Canada to create a more winter sustainable campus through the road salt reduction project. This project was well communicated to partners and the broader community via the communication strategy put into place. RUW hosted more than 8 outreach events between November 2018 and August 2019. These events have engaged more than 150 students, 125 researchers and potential collaborators, and 100 members of the public. RUW has also reached almost 42,000 users through tweets pertaining to this project. The goals of the project were: To evaluate the effectiveness of using anti-icing for reducing road salt usage on the Ryerson University campus, and to promote road salt reduction to the public, private commercial property owners, water professionals, and policy/ decision-makers. https://www.ryerson.ca/water/research/salt_project/
The Urban Water Symposium - From Amsterdam to Toronto was a one day event, held on January 20th, 2020, that was held in collaboration between Ryerson Urban Water and Wageningen University from The Netherlands. It was aimed to share research and future developments in the areas of water quality, use and demand, management and governance, and technical measures from Amsterdam to Toronto. This symposium was the genesis of the FUNky water research project between Ryerson Urban Water and Wagengen University.The Symposium Program featured 4 thematic sessions with ample time for audience participation in the following areas:
1. Ecological, biological, and chemical water quality characterization and issues
2. Water use and demand of surface water, storm water, ground water, and wastewater
3. Urban Water management and governance
4. Water treatment technologies, reuse and recovery, green infrastructure
Speakers hailed from Ryerson, University of Toronto, Wageningen University, Ministry of Environment, Parks and Conservation, City of Toronto, Toronto Water, Credit Valley Conservation Authority, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, Dillon Consulting, Cambium Aboriginal.
The Place Conference 2019 offered a collaborative space for students to engage with influential academics and professionals regarding today’s emerging urban planning issues. The aim is to encourage planners and geographers from different provinces to gather together and learn from one another. One of the areas of focus was sustainability. Sustainable planning can improve the welfare of people and their communities, shaping their urban areas and neighborhoods into healthier, more efficient spaces. We are active on both Ontario College and University Sustainability Professionals (OCUSP) and Ontario Association of Physical Plant Administrators (OAPPA), networks to share best practices.
OCUSP is a group of sustainability professionals affiliated with colleges and universities in Ontario. The group is dedicated to providing opportunities to network with sustainability professionals, share ideas and best practices between like-minded institutions, monitor environmental performance of institutions and advocate for a collective action and policy positions for sustainability related issues in post secondary education in Ontario.
OAPPA is a group of members whose objective is to promote cooperation among Physical Plant Departments of Institutions of the Provincially assisted Universities of Ontario, and other groups, on matters relating to staff development, planning, construction, operations and maintenance of facilities.
