3.1 Student participation in governance

Does the institution have one or more ongoing bodies through which students can democratically participate in the governance of the institution?:

Undergraduate students elect other students to serve as Senators on the undergraduate student government - Associated Students at UNM (ASUNM). Graduate students elect other students to serve as Council Representatives on the graduate student body - the Graduate and Professional Students Association (GPSA). Both organizations have committees and regular meetings that promote activities and policies that address the interest of their constituencies. The ASUNM and GPSA presidents meet regularly with the senior administrators at the university and also sit on the UNM President's Executive Council, budget committees, and are on the agenda to present at each Regent’s meeting. ASUNM and GPSA also work with UNM Government and Community Relations to advocate on behalf of students at the New Mexico Legislature.

Yes

A UNM student is chosen every two years to serve on the UNM Board of Regents, which is the highest decision-making body at the university. The Student Regent is one of seven full voting members of the Board of Regents and has the same rights and responsibilities as other Board members, although Student Regents serve two-year terms while other Board members are appointed to staggered six-year terms. https://regents.unm.edu/student-regent/index.html
 
In addition, the Associated Students of UNM (ASUNM) President and the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) President are included as advisory members on the Student Success, Teaching, and Research Committee of the Board of Regents.

The tradition of faculty governance of the University of New Mexico is found in the Faculty Constitution established in 1949. The University faculty has broad powers assigned to it by the Board of Regents and the Faculty Constitution and has the right of review and action in regard to the following:
1. formulation of institutional aims;
2. creation of new colleges, schools, and departments and divisions;
3. major curricular changes and other matters which in the opinion of the President of the University or his/her delegate to affect the institution as a whole;
4. requirements for admission and graduation and for honors and scholastic performance in general;
5. approval of candidates for degrees (honorary degrees and posthumous degrees);
6. policies of appointment, dismissal, and promotion in academic rank;
7. research; and
8. general faculty welfare.

The UNM Staff Council Constitution, Article II, Section 1, explicitly details the purpose of Staff Council: "...to represent the interests of all staff, and to serve as an important source of input into the issues and decisions of the University as they relate to the general welfare of the staff of the University of New Mexico." The Staff Council represents UNM Staff to the University administration, and the Staff Council president serves as an advisory member of the Board of Regents. Staff Council presidents meet regularly with the senior administrators at the university and also sit on the UNM President's Executive Council, budget committees, and are on the agenda to present at each Regent’s meeting.
