Anne Jakle was hired as the Director of Sustainability in 2024 to oversee a standalone Office of Sustainability; this office reports directly to the Vice President for Institutional Support Services. Mary Clark is the Sustainability Manager who also works in this office.

The Office of Sustainability at the University of New Mexico is the driving force behind campus-wide sustainability initiatives. We collaborate across campus entities to encourage sustainable practices that support the University’s academic, research, health care, and community engagement mission.

The Office of Sustainability was created in March 2024. Since that time, the office has coordinated creation of a greenhouse gas inventory for Scope 1 and 2 emissions of the university, a Tree Campus USA submission, and coordinated this STARS submission. In addition, we have helped stage a waste audit of the Student Union Building, reinvigorated recycling at student housing move-in, redesigned the sustainability website, and started coordinating processes for clean energy tax credits and grant writing. In Fall 2024, we are launching a campus-wide sustainability strategic planning effort.
