Narrative outlining how building-level energy performance is assessed and how the results are used to improve performance:
The UNM Albuquerque Campus has almost every building individually metered for electricity, chilled water, natural gas, and steam. Each month, a team of Energy Specialists monitor the utility usage in each building and conduct an AHRAE Type I and II energy audit based on whether the data is showing a spike or reduction in usage.
Each specialist is assigned a specific area on campus. Their job is to search for possible energy conservation measures or possible problems in the HVAC and lighting systems. Once a potential measure is determined, the Energy Specialist communicates with the correct Facilities Management personnel to implement the measure. If a problem with the equipment is found, the Energy Specialist will immediately communicate the issue to an FM tech in order to fix the problem at a faster pace.
Facilities Management upgrades mechanical and electrical equipment regularly in facilities which allow more energy conservation measures to be implemented.
Some of the routine energy conservation measures that are determined include:
1) Heating and cooling time-of-day schedules
2) Continuous commissioning of HVAC equipment
3) Lighting upgrades and issues
4) Behavior modification
After an energy conservation measure is implemented, the Energy Conservation Specialist checks the data to determine if it was successful. The process begins all over again every month.

Narrative outlining how building-level water performance is assessed and how the results are used to improve performance:
In 2022, UNM worked with an outside consultant team to conduct a water assessment throughout the Albuquerque Campus. From the findings in the water assessment, tactical teams were created to see which recommendations could be implemented. These tactical teams related to the main campus included grounds and landscaping, building maintenance, utilities, and golf courses. Each team reviewed the findings and implemented the recommendations based on cost and impact.
Currently, UNM is still tracking monthly water usage and trying to apply the recommendations from the water assessment. Each tactical team is continuously looking for ways to improve water efficiency with new equipment when feasible.
