Does the institution host a peer-to-peer exchange program or lending library that is explicitly designed to ensure that students in financial need have access to required course material?:
Yes
Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the peer-to-peer course materials exchange program or lending library:
UNM’s Open Educational Resource (OER) initiative established in 2022 seeks to provide faculty members with the support they need to adopt low and no-cost textbook and class material solutions for their courses when it aligns with their instructional objectives and academic freedom (see https://oer.unm.edu/). UNM received a federal Open Textbook Grant for nearly $2.125 million to pursue its commitment to advancing education through OER. There is a new website that will host these open access textbooks: https://nmoer.pressbooks.pub/. The open access textbook created for just one English Core Composition class was estimated to save UNM students nearly $100,000 in course material costs for just a single semester.
In addition, UNM offers course reserves, both print and digital, where students can check out either library-owned or personal copies of materials material for a short-term loan (2 hours, 1 day, or 3 days). UNM also provides links to ebooks, articles, and, under certain circumstances, scans of print materials. For examples of course reserve collections, see the Health Sciences Library course reserves: https://libguides.health.unm.edu/coursereserves/students or the School of Law Library: https://lawlibrary.unm.edu/students/course-prep.html
Does the institution provide incentives for academic employees that explicitly encourage the authorship, peer review, and/or adoption of open educational resources?:
Yes
Narrative and/or website URL that provides an overview of the institution’s incentives for open educational resources:
The University of New Mexico Open Textbook Pilot Program is a university-sponsored professional development program designed to support faculty with the adoption, adaptation, and creation of OER materials into their courses as a way to increase student success. OER work, particularly OER authorship and development, can require additional effort on the part of instructors, so this program was created to support their work.
This program aims to:
• Encourage the development of alternatives to high-cost textbooks by supporting the adoption, adaptation, or creation of OER.
• Provide support to faculty to implement these approaches.
• Lower the cost of college for students in order to contribute to their retention, progression, and graduation.
• Encourage faculty to engage in new pedagogical models for classroom instruction.
• Develop a Community of Practice surrounding OER integration
