A number of faculty and lecturers at UNM attend and contribute to Association for Environmental Studies & Sciences (AESS) through annual conferences and membership. UNM is also a member of the Association for the Advancement in Higher Education (AASHE).

Central New Mexico Community College and Santa Fe Community College both teach the SUST1134 Intro to Sustainability Course, which allows students to enter UNM having already completed core courses for the Sustainability Studies minor. This is part of the common course numbering adopted in New Mexico that allows students within NM higher educational institutions to transfer any credit among the state's higher ed institutions.

UNM leads the Transformation Network (TN), which aims to build resilient communities and ecosystems throughout the Intermountain Western United States. The TN represents a partnership between eight Western U.S. universities with over 50 partner organizations representing Tribal partners, governmental and non-governmental organizations, public utilities, conservation districts, irrigation districts, and municipalities. Its collaborative working groups and place-based collaboratives address impacts of catastrophic wildfires, dwindling water supplies, and rapid urban population growth in the Western United States. Melinda Morgan, Distinguished Professor at UNM, is the lead.
