8.2 Recognition of integrated, community-based, and extra-academic research

Does the institution have published promotion or tenure guidelines or policies that give explicit positive recognition to integrated research?:
Yes

Description or text of the promotion/tenure guidelines or policies that explicitly recognize integrated research:

The Honors College explicitly states that interdisciplinary research will be given the same weight as other research in promotion and tenure decision making. It states: "Candidates for tenure must demonstrate that they are active and creative participants in the scholarship or artistry of their professional discipline and/or interdisciplinary studies. Successful candidates must demonstrate that they can develop new research/creative projects and bring them to an appropriate conclusion. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the Honors College, it is expected that interdisciplinary scholarship will be given the same weight in tenure considerations as discipline-specific scholarship. The Honors College recognizes that outstanding interdisciplinary scholarship may be published in various forms and venues including electronic media." Do the promotion/tenure guidelines or policies that recognize integrated research cover all of the institution’s research-producing academic divisions?:
No

Does the institution have published promotion or tenure guidelines or policies that give explicit positive recognition to community-based research?:
Yes

Description or text of the promotion/tenure guidelines or policies that explicitly recognize community-based research:
The UNM Health Sciences Center (HSC) recognizes community engaged scholarship in some of its Tenure & Promotion Guidelines, specifically in the College of Population Health, School of Medicine, and College of Pharmacy. For example, the College of Population Health has a core section in its T&P Guidelines entitled "Scholarship and Research Including Community Engaged Scholarship," which outlines how community engaged scholarship is included in evaluation for promotion and tenure.

The Anderson School of Management recognizes community-engaged scholarship for all its departments, stating in front of all departmental P&T Guidelines:

"Community Engaged Scholarship Community engaged scholarship in scholarly work, teaching, and service may be used to enhance the candidate’s portfolio for promotion to full professor and for tenure and promotion to associate professor. For the areas of teaching and service it is the candidate’s responsibility to clearly document the impact and value of the community engagement in annual review materials and in the promotion/tenure dossier. The candidate is also responsible for documenting the impact and value of community engagement in scholarly activity. A faculty member wishing to pursue community-engaged scholarship that may not be published in peer reviewed journals should first consult with the department chair and senior department faculty to ensure the project has: clear goals, methodological rigor, significance, effective dissemination of results, a plan for reflective critique, and a strategy for obtaining acceptable peer review. The acceptability of community-engaged scholarly activity should be documented in annual reviews or a memo from the department chair to the candidate prior to, or in early stages of, the scholarly activity."

In 2017, a pilot program for Tenure & Promotion guidelines in the UNM School of Architecture and Planning included community engagement policies, including:

• "It is central to the educational mission of the School that its faculty stays current with their discipline, works to have a social or community impact, and grows professionally."

• "Creative professional work, scholarship, community engaged practice and research—whether qualitative or quantitative, theoretical or applied—are all valid means to demonstrate competence and growth. The ultimate objective for evaluating the quantity and quality of these components is generation of new knowledge and practices that are of use in the classroom, to our professions, to local and global communities, and for the benefit of the environment. Quality is given a higher priority than quantity. It is required that faculty members develop a body of work sufficient to demonstrate intellectual and professional focus and growth."

• "Scholarship is the pursuit of knowledge and understanding through the study of the existing literature. Scholarship often involves the analysis and synthesis of existing research and is particularly appropriate for improving the knowledge base required for teaching a subject. Community engaged scholarship seeks to enhance the well-being of local communities, and to create new knowledge that informs a broader understanding of practice-based evidence. Scholarship may be demonstrated by independent studies, academic works, articles, professional reports, publicly adopted processes, lectures, conferences, exhibits, etc. "

Assistant Professor
• "Promotion or appointment to assistant professor is appropriate for faculty members who have demonstrated competence in the classroom and/or in their field of professional work. Teaching or professional experience is required. Accomplishment in research, creative work or community engagement may be limited, but there should be a record of endeavor and indication of potential. New hires at the Assistant Professor rank should clearly demonstrate the potential to attain tenure at the University of New Mexico."

Associate Professor
• "Research, creative activities or/ and community engagement are expected to reflect high levels of competence and creativity but not yet demonstrate the maturity, experience, and skill expected of senior faculty. Creative professional work should form a body of work that demonstrates competence and knowledge of current developments in the field. The quantity of research or creative work must be judged in the context of the faculty members' workload history and assignments."

Other colleges/departments that explicitly recognize community engaged scholarship in T&P guidelines are the College of Education and the Honors College.

Though not related to T&P directly, one symbol of UNM's commitment to public service is the Community Engaged Scholarship Lectureship Award. See: https://research.unm.edu/events/cerl

Do the promotion/tenure guidelines or policies that recognize community-based research cover all of the institution’s research-producing academic divisions?:
No

Does the institution have published promotion or tenure guidelines or policies that give explicit positive recognition to research impact or reach outside of academic journals?:
Yes

Description or text of the promotion/tenure guidelines or policies that explicitly recognize research impact or reach outside of academic journals:
There are a number of colleges or departments that give recognition of research impact outside of academic journals. These include the Anderson School of Management, the School of Law, the College of University Libraries and Learning, many of the Health Sciences Center (HSC) departments, the Native American Studies Department, and the School of Architecture and Planning.

The UNM College of Population Health has T&P guidelines that include a community engaged focus, related to community engaged scholarship and includes other products beyond peer review articles, including support of community engaged partnerships. They collect information from faculty monthly that includes these additional components beyond traditional research products.

The Native American Studies Department states in its T&P guidelines that: "These forms of “scholarship and teaching application” are not limited to the usual peer reviewed journal articles but can also include: participation in seminars, symposia and other forums for the purpose of developing research agendas; creation of specific courses and research agendas to meet social, political, or legal goals of a particular Native community; creation of curricula and training programs designed to disseminate a Native perspective to other professional groups or to provide training within Native communities; participation in programs integrating various bodies of knowledge and a range of cultural values within academic knowledge and teaching praxis; community based teaching and learning and; creation of visual, print, audio or digital curricular materials."

In 2017, a pilot program for Tenure & Promotion guidelines in the UNM School of Architecture and Planning included give explicit positive recognition to research impact or reach outside of academic journals. See following excerpts for information on the additions:
